If you are reading this you most likely have struggles with acne as so many of us do. There are so many products, treatments and diet suggestions that promise results but often give no or short lived results.
We all experience acne at one point or another, typically in our teen and young adult years, and for most of us, these acne issues go away. But some of us are left with acne problems that last much longer than we would like, leaving us to deal with anywhere from mild to severe acne conditions that can bother us for years.
A knowledgeable esthetician can analyze your skin and give appropriate treatment suggestions for your areas of concern. At Ageless Medi Aestheitcs one of these recommended treatments that is appropriate for all types of acne suffers is Acne IPL. This treatment is best at targeting the causes of acne under the skin while keeping the top layer of the skin completely safe and has long term results.
Understanding How IPL Photofacial Works
The science behind light-based treatments is simple, although most patients may find it confusing the first time. IPL photofacial utilizes the body’s natural healing processes to create significant changes to the targeted area.
The laser technology emits quick pulses of intense light to the targeted area. IPL is the preferred type of photofacial because it uses a broad-spectrum light source, making it an applicable treatment for a variety of skin problems, including acne, age spots, rosacea, acne scars, and more.
Unlike the typical laser procedure which utilizes just a single light wavelength, IPL treatment releases a set of different pulsed light wavelengths, similar to the flash of a photo. This makes the pulses less focused and more scattered than what you would achieve with typical laser devices. Scattered intense pulsed light can penetrate to deeper layers of the skin beneath acne and fine lines without causing damage to the top layer.
When the pulses touch the skin, the energy is absorbed by pigment cells and turns into heat. This heat beneath the surface of the skin can destroy spots, freckles, hair follicles, and the bacteria that may be causing the patient’s acne. While IPL can be used on any part of the body, it isn’t recommended on uneven areas such as knees.
Is IPL Photofacial a Good Treatment for Acne?
If you have acne and you are looking for the best solution to get rid of it, then IPL photofacial is the solution you need. More and more doctors are recommending IPL photofacials for patients with severe acne or acne scarring, as well as other conditions like sun spots and age spots (through targeting blood vessels), and fine lines.
With just a few sessions, IPL treatments can clear up even the most extreme cases of facial acne and/or acne scarring. With alternatives like oral antibiotics that can be harmful to some patients, IPL therapy is a safe and easy option for acne removal.
When dealing with acne, IPL photofacials treatments generally utilize three filters or wavelengths: 420 nm or blue light, 560 nm of yellow light, and 590 nm of red light. These three filters provide their own properties:
- 420 nm (blue light): Destroying certain acne bacteria
- 560 nm (yellow light): Tending swollen acne lesions
- 590 nm (red light): Paralyzing overactive oil glands in the skin
What is the Typical IPL Laser Treatment for Acne?
The exact treatment needed will depend on the severity of the patient’s acne condition. The typical skin treatment course should be about 4-10 sessions, each session a few weeks apart or during an active breakout. Sessions can last anywhere from 30-60 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated.
Each treatment begins with a protective cooling gel being applied to the targeted area. This will help keep the top layer of the skin safe from the heat without preventing the IPL flashes from penetrating the skin. The treatment is comfortable for client as it is not painful. At most the client feels a warming sensation.
Healing and Recovery: How Long Does IPL Take to Heal?
A great advantage of IPL treatment is that it causes minimal damage to the top layer of the skin, meaning healing and recovery is quicker than with other types of skin and acne treatments. You can have your treatment done overyour lunch hour and go back to the office afterwards without anyone knowing you have just had a procedure.
Patients can expect to see some improvements after their first treatment, but full results won’t start to become visible until after the first few treatments are done and they are several weeks into their treatments. To maximize your recovery, follow the following tips:
- Use lotion to moisturize the skin daily
- Wash the face a couple times a day with cleanser
- If the skin is in pain, don’t apply makeup
- Always use sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 if you plan to go outside to avoid sun damage, as sun damage is very harmful to the skin

Both work but one has the advantage!
Two options you can turn to when you’ve exhausted all the tedious methods of hair removal ie. waxing, plucking etc are laser hair removal (LHR) and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments.
But what’s the difference between laser and IPL and which one is better for hair removal?
Both laser hair removal (LHR) and intense pulsed light (IPL) use light to get rid of unwanted hair. This light helps prevent hair from growing back long-term making these options incredibly popular.
Many people think these methods of hair removal are the same. They are similar, but they don’t use the same technology and they don’t produce the same results.
So if you’re thinking of opting for Laser hair removal or IPL you should first figure out which one is right for you. And make sure the clinic you are attending treatments at has the technology you want!
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is similar to IPL, but at the same time completely different! Medical grade lasers emit a single wavelength of light that focuses on a target area. This light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair only and doesn’t make contact with the surrounding skin or other types of tissue in the treatment area making it a safer option.
The laser causes the hair shaft and the hair follicle to heat up which interrupts the hair growth cycle and stops hair growth by cauterizing the papilla which is the blood flow that feed the hair. When the papilla is cauterized no new hairs can grow from that follicle.
Laser hair removal works best on darker hair but can address lighter hair as well but often requires more treatments to achieve the same results.
Laser hair removal treatments with us cost anywhere between $45-$200 per treatment and can take approximately eight treatments for up to a 94% reduction of hair.
What is an IPL treatment for hair removal?
IPL or intense pulsed light treatment is a way of getting rid of unwanted body hair, as well as treating pigment or vascular lesions.
By using a broad spectrum of light, IPL can target only dark hair. Similar to the way wearing black on a sunny day can cause you to heat up, the dark hairs absorb the light, heat up, and are destroyed all the way down to the root.
IPL treatment for permanent hair reduction works best on darker hair and might not be as effective on lighter-coloured hair. IPL also carries a greater risk of surface burns on the epidermis since it is a broader more shallow treatment area per pulse.
IPL treatments for hair reduction can cost anywhere between $85-$300 per treatment and can take approximately eight treatments for up to a 70% reduction of hair.
What’s the difference between laser hair removal and IPL?
Both laser and IPL use light to heat the hair follicle. This prevents growth and gets rid of any unwanted hair.
The key difference between laser hair removal and IPL is that IPL is associated with higher amounts of discomfort, whereas laser hair removal is virtually pain-free. Despite this, both modalities are highly effective in the treatment of unwanted hair.
However, it’s the technology that delivers the light that is the key difference between the two. That and the kind of light that’s being used.
Lasers produce a specific type of light for the treatment that only has one wavelength (colour) of light going in one direction. This creates a beam similar to a laser pointer.
IPL devices produce a much wider range of wavelengths of light which appears as a single white flash. The type of light in an IPL is similar to natural light and can have a light orange glow when flashed against the skin.
When it comes to hair removal both laser light and IPL light work in exactly the same way. The light enters the skin, is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft and the hair follicle.
One of the main objectives of laser or IPL is to hit the right temperature in the hair follicle and avoid heating up the skin. If the skin was to be heated up then it would cause damage and could result in a blister, as well as undesired pigment changes. This risk is higher with IPL because of the broader flash of light affecting more of the skins surface area.
Is laser hair removal or IPL better?
To figure out whether IPL or laser is better for hair removal we’re going to take a look at 5 different factors and compare them.
1. Light source
IPL uses a broad spectrum of light. This targets the hair’s melanin pigment and heats the hair up, causing damage to the follicles.
Laser hair removal heats up the hair and damages the hair follicles with light energy. The laser focuses on a smaller area and often travels further into the pore. The light used with lasers is concentrated more finely on an area where the hair is being removed, increasing its effectiveness and decreasing the potential for side effects.
2. Follow-up treatment
Laser hair removal is definitely a more aggressive treatment. It penetrates deeper into the pores giving you better results. This means you may require fewer treatments to get your desired outcome.
IPL on the other hand doesn’t solely focus on hair so you may require more treatments to stop your hairs from growing back.
3. Time Savings
The average woman spends 72 entire days of her life or 1,728 hours, just shaving her legs alone!
The time savings and improved quality of life are substantial with the treatment of permanent hair reduction with either IPL treatments or Laser treatments.
4. Pain rating
IPL typically has higher amounts of discomfort, whereas laser hair removal is virtually pain-free.
We’ve pulled out the most common treatment areas and the average treatment pain rating on a scale of 0 (no pain) – 10 (worst pain you’ve ever had) below with lighter skin colour and dark hair.
|Treatment Area||IPL treatment pain rating||Laser treatment pain rating|
Are you still unsure which treatment is best for you?
We have both laser and IPL modalities and always use our diode laser for hair removal to give our clients the very best results. Please be sure when booking a hair removal service with any provider to ask which type of technology they are using. Many clinics advertise Laser Hair Removal but are actually using an IPL machine. It is your right to know what technology you are paying for.
Some popular areas for laser hair removal are:
- Mens Beard Shaping
- And anywhere else you may have unwanted hair.
No more ingrown hairs, itchiness, expensive razors and getting to wear what you want when you want without fretting about unsightly hair!!

This month get $100 OFF CLINICAL GRADE MICRONEEDLING with mesotherapy on any area!!!!!
Medical Grade Micro-needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy) is a safe and increasingly popular skin renewal technique to restore the healthy, youthful appearance of your skin by stimulating the production of collagen.
It is an efficient and safe approach to skin rejuvenation with minimal or zero downtime.
Skin needling produces similar results to ‘ablative techniques’ such as Fraxel, lasers, sublative and deep chemical peels. However, it is much less invasive and does not require the removal of the epidermis.
Healing time is shorter and much more comfortable. In fact you should be able to resume your normal routine an just a day or two!
Skin needling is also one of the few skin therapies that is suitable for treating all skin types, including ethnic skin and fragile skin around the eyes, mouth and neck.
HOW IT WORKS
Collagen is a protein which gives skin its structure and makes it smooth and young-looking. Micro-needling creates micro-injuries which triggers the skin’s healing response in the same way that it would normally respond to cuts, burns and other abrasions.
Skin healing encourages collagen production and this helps to regenerate and thicken the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles, scars and other imperfections, giving the skin a smooth, clear, firm and younger-looking appearance.

The colour lasts brilliantly, there’s a large spectrum of shades to choose from and it works beautifully on both skin and hair. For many clients, it reduces the need to fill in brows at all, leaving a gorgeous matte finish.
WHY WE LOVE IT
- Easily fill gaps, add fullness and create your ideal brow shape
- An alternative to permanent makeup for fuller looking brows
- The broad spectrum of henna shades allow you to get the perfect colour

Henna tinting normally lasts 3-6 weeks, however results may vary depending on your skin type. Oily skin is still suitable for henna tinting however it may fade faster than other skin types.
Henna is gentle on the skin and can be easily applied to almost everyone. It’s the perfect option for filling gaps in brows, correcting brow shape and adding fullness. It’s also a great way to save time filling in eyebrows each morning. If you are finding your regular tint is fading too quickly or not giving you the right colour tone, try henna, it’s the perfect alternative.
Some things that may prevent you from having a henna brow treatment:
- A known allergy to henna
- Skin infections around the area
- Fake tan applied within 24 hours ( as the product will react )
Brow Henna Tint $50
Brow Henna Tint and Sculpt $80
(includes detailed measurements, shaping, wax and tweeze for the most defined look)
BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
To prepare your skin for a henna brow treatment, please ensure your skin is thoroughly cleaned before you arrive with no oily residue left on the surface. Avoid exfoliating the area within a few days before your treatment ( as well as post treatment ) as henna stains the skin and will adhere to the dead skin cells.
Henna is applied much like regular tint. Your therapist will use a fine brush to apply the henna which is a liquid consistency. As it will stain everything it touches, it’s important to stay still while it’s being applied. Once dry, your therapist will cleanse the henna from your brows and conditions them with a brow serum.
Henna sculpting can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the shade you’re looking to achieve and if you’re having them tidied up (sculpted) during the treatment.
If your therapist shows you the results and you wish for them to be darker, an extra layer can easily be applied to create a deeper colour.
POST TREATMENT CARE
The aftercare instructions for this treatment are very important in ensuring your brow colour lasts as long as possible. Skin type does play a big part in the longevity of your henna tint and those with oily skin may see their brow colour fade sooner. It’s extremely important to keep your brows dry for 48 hours post treatment. After that, your brows can be wet but avoid rubbing or exfoliating the area – brushing them is fine. Oil based products will fade the henna faster, so avoid applying oily products to your brow area.

What is Microblading?
Microblading is a form of tattooed makeup, but unlike regular permanent makeup, microblading is semi-permanent. This means the results can last anywhere between 1-3 years, depending on your skin type. After your eyebrows fade, you can get them microbladed again in a different brow style without having to get them removed.
(if you prefer longer lasting results you will want our machine applied techniques that can last 4-9 years. Call us to book a consultation for these methods as well)
The process is fairly similar to tattooing. It begins with properly sanitizing the area, numbing, picking your custom color, measuring and deciding together or the best shape and size for your face. Then using a brand-new hand tool (or a “pen”) with several needles to create hair strokes the high-quality cosmetic-grade permablend vegan pigments are deposited into the skin.
Before the Treatment
Prior to getting your brows done, you must make sure that you aren’t using any of the following for at least 72 hours beforehand:
- Aspirin, ibuprofen, alcoholic beverages
- Fish oil
- Vitamin E
These will all cause the blood to thin and may result in thicker hair strokes then desired. You should also avoid sunbathing, waxing or threading, and any treatments that encourage faster exfoliation and skin cell production like microdermabrasion or chemical peels a few weeks before and after the procedure.
The Healing Process and After Care Instructions
The healing process is pretty much the same as taking care of a tattoo. After the procedure, you will be provided with an after care sheet of instructions along with a container of special ointment to apply daily to protect your new brows from infection and help more even healing. Just like with tattoos, it’s important to apply just a thin layer of A&D skin ointment. The tattoo needs to breathe, so be careful to apply just a very thin layer to keep it from drying and cracking. You may have some light scabbing but nothing excessive so don’t feel like you will have to hide away at home during the haling process.
Sweating, swimming, and getting your brows wet should be avoided for at least 10 days after the treatment. Stick to brief showers and avoid the face. If you need to clean your face, use cotton pads and sterile water to wipe down your brow area and then apply ointment when dry.
Direct sun exposure should be avoided for at least 30 days and threading or waxing should be avoided for at least 14 days. The skin is still very tender post-procedure as tattoos are basically a form of scarification, so you should let your skin heal accordingly.
Microblading is great for:
- People who suffer from alopecia
- People who have faint or blonde brows
- People with sparse brows
- Anyone tired of doing brow makeup daily
- Anyone who needs a fresher brow look
Microbladed Brows Are Low-Maintenance
Before hitting North America, microblading was first popularized in Asian countries as a means to enhance natural eyebrows, not create high-arched or unnatural-looking ones. This allows your natural eyebrows to grow in without having to constantly tweeze, wax or thread your brows into a shape it doesn’t naturally have.
Although you can choose to have a different style of eyebrow arch other than the one you were born with, doing so defeats its original purpose: convenience.
Lindsay also specializes in ombre’ powder shading that can achieve a more filled in and voluminous look, which can be done during your initial session or just added at the complimentary 4-6 week touch-up session.
Does it Hurt?
Most clients find the procedure quite comfortable. Before beginning the microblading, a anesthetic cream will be applied to both brows. During the treatment if you feel anything the anesthetic can be reapplied.
Men Can Get Microbladed Too
Contrary to popular belief, men are also suitable candidates for microblading! This doesn’t mean that you’ll have high arches like a woman’s – microblading is great for men who have bald spots or sparse areas on their brows. Just like how eyebrow waxing and threading is becoming a popular trend for male grooming, microblading is becoming extremely popular with males as well.
Cost Vs. Convenience
A lot of people wonder about the long-term worth of microblading when considering the price. It’s true that microblading isn’t as affordable as getting waxed or threaded, but it definitely offers long-term convenience for busy people as well as a semi-permanent solution for those with balding or sparse brows.
Microblading is just $150-$450 depending on whether you need a whole new set of brows or just a touch-up and which technique you desire (hair strokes, ombre’, shading etc) Your full set of brows also includes a free touch-up at the 4-6 week mark where we can make any adjustments necessary including but not limited to adding to the size, adjusting shape, filling in and adjusting coloring so you are left with your most desired brows.
We offer complimentary consultations and can give quotes over the phone if you provide us with pictures.
